Quotes from the Scholars of Islam

“When you face hardship, and you are unable to complete it then say:

لا حَوْلَ وَلا قُوَّةَ إِلا باللَّهِ

‘There is no might nor power except with Allāh.’

Allāh will make it easy for you [your affairs].”

Riyādh as-Sāliheen, 5/522 | Shaykh ibn ‘Uthaymeen [may Allāh have mercy on him]

Sufyān bin ‘Uyaynah [may Allāh have mercy on him] said:

“If Allāh, the Almighty and Majestic, did not conceal our shortcomings, we would not sit [i.e., interact] with one another.”

Shu’ab ul-Eemān, 6/290 | Al-Imām al-Bayhaqi [may Allāh have mercy on him]

Al-Hasan al-Basri [may Allāh have mercy on him] said:

‘O’ assembly of young people, I warn you of procrastination, [by saying]: ‘I shall do this, and soon I shall do that.’”

Mālik ibn Dinār [may Allāh have mercy on him] said: “The Pious [Predecessors and Successors] would advise one another with three [key pieces of guidance]:

1. Imprisonment of the tongue

2. To implore Allāh and beseech Him, seeking His forgiveness in abundance.

3. Isolation [especially in times of trials and tribulation].”

Hilyat ul-Awliyā’a, 2/377 | Abu Nuaym al-Asfahāni [may Allāh have mercy on him]

The Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said to his Companions: “Shall I not inform you of some words which, if distress or a calamity befalls any of you and he offers this supplication, it will bring him joy? It is the supplication of Dhun-Nūn (Yunus عَلَيْهِ السَّلاَم): لآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَـٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

‘There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except You. Glory be to You! I have certainly done wrong.’”

Saheeh al-Jāmi’, 2605 | Shaykh al-Albāni رحمه الله | Saheeh

Al-Imām Sufyan ath-Thawri [may Allāh bestow mercy upon him] said: “It is amazing that a man, is well-acquainted with his friend, who is well-known to him for his affection and sincere advice, and he knows nothing of him except good for fifty years, then a man who is unknown to him comes to him and informs him of something bad about his friend, and he accepts it from him and forsakes his friendship!”

Abu Hātim [may Allāh have mercy on him] said: “It is obligatory for the intelligent​ person to use his ears twice as much [in comparison to his tongue] and to understand that he has been granted two ears and one mouth, so that he will be listening more than he speaks.”

Abul ‘Āliyyah [may Allāh have mercy on him] said: “A time will come upon the people wherein there hearts will be devoid and derelict of the Qur’ān. They will find neither sweetness nor acquire any delight by its recitation. If they fall short of performing what they have been commanded to do, they will say: ‘Certainly, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’ If they commit that which they have been forbidden from doing, they will say: ‘We shall be forgiven, we have not associated any partners unto Allāh.’ Their affairs will be based on covetousness [and false hope], possessing no truth [and no sincerity].”

*Safeguard Your Tongue*

It was said to Bakr bin ‘Abd-Allāh al-Muzzani [may Allāh have mercy on him]: “Certainly, you preserve silence for long intervals.

He replied: ‘Certainly my tongue is [like] a predatory animal, if I let it loose it will destroy me.’”

Al-Imām ibn ul-Jawzi [may Allāh have mercy on him] “Never despair of the Mercy of Allāh, even if the trial is long!”

Mālik ibn Deenār, [may Allāh bestow mercy upon him], said: “If you see hardness in your heart, weakness in your body, and deprivation in your provision, *then know that you have spoken about that which does not concern you.*”

Al-Imām an-Nawawi, [may Allāh bestow mercy upon him], said: “Whosoever wishes to speak a word or sentence should reflect upon the consequences before speaking; if the advantages of doing so become clear, he should speak; otherwise, he should refrain from speaking.”

Al-Imām an-Nawawi [may Allāh have mercy on him] said: “Whomsoever wishes to honour his parents, then let him give charity on their behalf, for [the reward of] charity will reach the deceased and benefit them, and there is no difference of opinion amongst the Muslims [regarding this matter].”

The Tābi’ee, Sa‘eed ibn Jubayr, [may Allāh bestow mercy upon him], would not allow anyone to backbite someone in his presence. He would say: ‘If you want [to say] that, then [go, say it] to his face!’”

At-Tabaqāt, 9112 | ibn Sa‘ad, [may Allāh bestow mercy upon him]

TN: Tābi’ee [plural Tābi’ūn] are followers or successors, of the generation of Muslims who followed the Sahābah [Companions of the Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ].

Al-Imām Malik bin Anas, [may Allāh bestow mercy upon him], said: “I did not issue a fatwa until there were seventy [scholars] who testified for me that I was qualified for it.”

Thirty four calamities the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ would seek refuge from.

The Messenger of Allāh صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:

“O’ Allāh I seek refuge in You from 1.Helplessness [in performing good deeds],
2. Laziness, lethargy,
3. Cowardice,
4. Miserliness,
5. Senility,
6. Hard heartedness,
7. Heedlessness,
8. Deprivation,
9. Disgrace
10. Destitution.
[O’ Allāh] I seek refuge in You from
11. Poverty,
12. Disbelief,
13. Polytheism
14. Dissoluteness,
15. Dissension,
16. Hypocrisy,
17. Repute,
18. Ostentation
[O’ Allāh] I seek refuge in You from
19. Deafness,
20. Being mute,
21. Insanity,
22. Leprosy,
23. Vitiligo
24. From any severe ailments.
[O’ Allāh] I seek refuge in You
25. Burden of being heavily in debt,
26. From being overpowered by men.
[O’ Allāh] I seek refuge in You
27. Against the declining of Your Favours,
28. The passing of safety,
29. The suddenness of Your punishment
30. And all that which causes Your wrath.
[O’ Allāh] I seek refuge in You
31. From the anguish of severe calamities,
32 The lowest depths of misery,
33. The evil of what is [divinely] decreed and
34. The gloating of enemies.”
